Most Store Honey Isn't Honey

From Food Safety News

More than three-fourths of the honey sold in U.S. grocery stores isn’t exactly what the bees produce, according to testing done exclusively for Food Safety News.

The results show that the pollen frequently has been filtered out of products labeled “honey.” The removal of these microscopic particles from deep within a flower would make the nectar flunk the quality standards set by most of the world’s food safety agencies.

The food safety divisions of the World Health Organization, the European Commission and dozens of others also have ruled that without pollen there is no way to determine whether the honey came from legitimate and safe sources.

In the U.S., the Food and Drug Administration says that any product that’s been ultra-filtered and no longer contains pollen isn’t honey. However, the FDA isn’t checking honey sold here to see if it contains pollen.  Read the entire article and view a list of brands that were tested.

Poor Sleep Affects Immune System

Severe sleep deprivation has the same effect on the immune system as physical stress, according to a new study.  Researchers ... found sleep loss triggers the production of white blood cells, known as granulocytes, particularly at night.

"The granulocytes reacted immediately to the physical stress of sleep loss and directly mirrored the body's stress response," explained the study's lead author, Katrin Ackermann, a postdoctoral researcher at the Eramus MC University Medical Center Rotterdam in the Netherlands, in a news release from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

In conducting the study, the researchers tracked the white blood cell count of 15 healthy young men who followed a strict schedule of eight hours of sleep every day for a week, then compared that with their white blood cell counts during 29 hours of sleep deprivation. Read the entire article.

Milk and Osteoporosis

The milk myth has spread around the world based on the flawed belief that this protein and calcium-rich drink is essential to support good overall health and bone health in particular at any age. It is easy to understand that the confusion about milk’s imaginary benefits stems from the fact that it contains calcium – around 300 mg per cup.

But many scientific studies have shown an assortment of detrimental health effects directly linked to milk consumption. And the most surprising link is that not only do we barely absorb the calcium in cow’s milk (especially if pasteurized), but to make matters worse, it actually increases calcium loss from the bones. What an irony this is! Here’s how it happens.

Sweet Potato: Veggie #1 Ranking in Nutrition

From SteadyHealth.com

Sweet potatoes are high in complex carbohydrates, beta carotene, vitamin B6, vitamin C, and dietary fiber.

Compared to other vegetables, the sweet potato ranks highest in nutrition; the high content of fiber and complex carbohydrates, vitamins A and C, calcium, protein, and iron rank it number one in nutrition with the white potato coming in second.

The different varieties of sweet potato have varying amounts of beta carotene; sweet potatoes that are dark orange have more than those with a lighter colored flesh. Because they are so rich in Vitamin A the cultivation of dark colored sweet potatoes is being encouraged in counties such as Africa where they lack sufficient amounts of Vitamin A and cause major health issues.

Studies have shown that sweet potatoes might be a very beneficial food for individuals whom are diagnosed with diabetes; in the animal studies preformed, sweet potatoes were shown to help stabilize the blood sugar levels and help to lower insulin resistance. Read the entire article.
