Buttered Popcorn Flavoring Linked to Alzheimer's

The flavorant, diacetyl, already is linked to lung damage in people who work in microwave popcorn factories. This led many microwave popcorn makers to stop using diacetyl in their products. But now other workers exposed to diacetyl -- and possibly consumers as well -- may face another scary risk.

University of Minnesota drug-design expert Robert Vince, PhD, and colleagues find that diacetyl causes brain proteins to misfold into the Alzheimer's-linked form called beta amyloid.

New Findings on Benefits of Chlorophyll

A major component of chlorophyll is the green-colored, water-soluble chlorophyllin. Researchers at the prestigious Oregon State University Linus Pauling Institute have found that chlorophyllin can potentially be used successfully to prevent and treat cancer.

Their findings, published in the International Journal of Cancer, showed that chlorophyllin inactivates a cellular enzyme called ribonucleotide reductase (1). This enzyme is needed by cells to produce DNA, the core substance essential for cell division. It just so happens that ribonucleotide reductase is also the target for the cancer chemotherapeutic drug called hydroxyurea.

The Oregon State researchers found that chlorophyllin provided a tenfold greater benefit against colon cancer cells as compared to hydroxyurea. Chlorophyllin almost completely stopped the activity of the enzyme in colon cancer cells growing in culture.

More specifically, chlorophyllin appears to prevent ribonucleotide reductase from being produced in the cell, while hydroxyurea acts to block the activity of the enzyme that has already been synthesized. The researchers suggest that chlorophyllin and hydroxyurea could be combined to effectively retard the production of DNA in colon cancer cells.

This postulated, combined therapeutic approach is a significant observation, but the cancer-preventive properties of chlorophyllin by itself are of equal importance. This brings greater meaning to the dietician’s suggestion that eating more green salads is beneficial to health. The same maxim applies to supplementing with our chlorophyll-containing products. Prenatal Surgery For Tumor in Unborn Child

A Miami girl, Lyna Gonzalez, underwent a never-before-done surgery that saved her life – while she was just seventeen weeks in the womb. Today, the only sign of the operation is a slight scar on her lip.

The May 2010 procedure removed an oral teratoma, a tennis ball-sized benign tumor that had formed on Lyna’s mouth. Aspartame Hidden In Milk and Diary Products

“The integrity of our food supply is poised for another blow. By asking the FDA to alter the definition of “milk” to include chemical sweeteners such as aspartame and sucralose without full disclosure will only lead to further distrust among consumers.
